The College Stores Salary & Benefits Survey report is a practical tool for benchmarking your store's compensation levels and benefits packages. This biennial report allows you to compare your store against other stores within the overall industry, as well as stores with similar sales volume, geographic region, type of school, type of school ownership, and urban or rural school locations.


The Salary & Benefits report is the ideal tool for considering new employee positions, upgrading existing positions, and cross-comparing your current pay structure. The 2013 survey results are based on data collected in 2012 and represent 368 participating college stores. The College Stores Salary & Benefit Survey is underwritten by the NACS Foundation and is conducted by NACS' OnCampus Research with the professional collaboration from Industry Insights, Inc.

  • The typical store manager/director is 52 years old with 25 years of retail experience.
  • 22% of responding manager/directors have achieved the Certified Collegiate Retailer (CCR) designation, and 66% had attended a NACS educational program in the past 12 months.
  • More than half the reported positions showed a median salary increase from 2011 to 2012. These increases ranged from 0.5% to 2.0%. 
  • Some other notable average salaries for U.S. college store positions include operations manager ($48,230); computer store/department manager ($52,059); and book department manager ($46,060).
