Determining Textbook Order Quantities
Module Two: Establishing Projected Sales

The goal of establishing projected sales is to order the amount of textbooks as close to what you think will sell. Determining how many copies of a title to have on hand is more of an art than an exact science, and will vary depending on many factors discussed later in module three.

Before determining the quantity of an adopted textbook to buy, the textbook buyer must determine the amount they expect to sell, or the projected sales. The thought process underlying each buying decision (i.e., how many of Title X to buy) can be expressed in the following formula:

Projected Sales - (Qty on Hand + Qty Bought Back) = # of Books to Buy or Source

As shown above, the first steps in determining the quantity of a title to buy is to determine the quantity expected to sell, here referred to as projected sales.
