Copyright Basics for the College Store
Module Four: The Impact of Technology

If a professor wants to put copyrighted material on a web site, you need to clearly communicate that on the permission request form by:

  • Informing the rights holder that permission is requested to post information electronically.
  • Addressing the security issue-advise the copyright owners whether the information will be protected via password, secure server, etc. (may increase chance of obtaining permission) and indicating who will have access to the information.
  • Providing dates of how long the information will be available on the web and when it will be removed.
  • Indicating where on the web site the material will be posted and whether the web site is linked to other sites.
  • Informing the rights holder whether the material will be scanned or typed in.
  • Providing a brief description of how the content is going to be used on the site (its purpose) and whether other media will be added (i.e., music or pictures).
  • Indicating whether the content will be archived.
When it comes to copyright and the web, NACS recommends always asking for permission. When copyrighted material appears on a computer, it's the same as seeing it in printed format on paper.
