Follett Settles Separate Copyright Lawsuits
9/18/98

Two copyright lawsuits filed by Follett Custom Publishing against a copy center and a privately owned bookstore have been settled.

One suit alleged that Krishna Copy Center, Berkeley, CA, had illegally reproduced coursepacks containing copyrighted materials originally produced by Follett Custom Publishing. As part of the settlement, Krishna has agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to Follett and will refrain from copying any additional Follett coursepacks.

Krishna will also put an advertisement in a local newspaper stating its commitment to the protection of copyrighted works and offering a refund to any customers who had purchased the disputed coursepacks from the copy center. Krishna also agreed to post a policy statement notifying patrons not to copy coursepacks or other copyrighted materials.

A separate lawsuit claimed that College Book Centers Inc., Glendale, AZ, had removed the copyright notice from a Follett-published lab guide and had made copies for sale, without obtaining permission. As part of the settlement, College Book Centers is issuing a public apology and will provide a refund to any customer that purchased the unauthorized copies of the lab guide.

Follett Custom Publishing (previously known as Custom Academic Publishing Co., or CAPCO) is a subsidiary of Follett Corp.
