E-Book Reader Uses Cards in Lieu of Web 5/21/99 A new type of electronic book reader that will hit the market in November stores digital text on a memory card instead of downloading e-books from the weba system that may be more palatable to publishers and bookstores. The GemBook Reader, produced by a Florida company called Gemtronics Inc., looks similar to the many other e-book devices already available. The paperback book-sized machine includes a viewing screen that displays book text page by page. However, unlike other e-book readers that download book text from the Internet directly or through a PC connection, the GemBook contains a slot for an integrated circuit memory card. Each GemBook card, about the size of a credit card, can hold the equivalent of a 600-page book. Longer books can be stored on higher-memory cards or as volumes on multiple cards. The memory cards are encrypted to prevent copying and would be sold just as traditional books are. Company President Gemma Beaulieu claims this system will be easier for consumers to use and more attractive to publishers that are wary about releasing books in easy-to-copy digital formatsusers will not need a computer, a keyboard, special software, or an Internet connection to obtain a digital book for the GemBook and publishers won't have to worry about unauthorized reproduction. The GemBook Reader does include an external service port to enable users to connect it to other devices for Internet access if desired. Phillip C. Polillo (pcpfam@juno.com) 8/16/1999 4:33:46 PM The GemBook will probably become the preeminent eBook on the market!!! Each school day my 13 year-old daughter loads about 25 pounds of books into her backpack and walks over a half mile to catch her bus. This is a viable way for her to cut her load to one electronic book, which each of her "books" on cards; in a format simple enough for a kid to use. All of the other ebooks are o complicated for a child to "download" their texts. This is simple, put the card in the slot!!! Smart thinking, go after the textbook market!!!!
