When Danny Key, CCR, sat on the committee that created the Aspen Award, he never thought about being one of its recipients. But after years of dedicated service, NACS named Key, director, Wingate University Bookstore, Wingate, NC, as the recipient of the 2008 Aspen Award.
The Aspen Award recognizes Key for his demonstrated dedication to NACS educational programming for raising the level of professional practice in college retailing; his commitment to professional development activities; for mentoring and coaching his staff, colleagues, and others; and his leadership and notable contribution to NACS educational programs, products, and services.
After just returning home from CAMEX 2008, Key had a little time to reflect on what the award means to him.
"It's kind of hard to put into words," he said. "NACS education is just very special to me and always has been. To be honored for my work with NACS education is very touching and very much appreciated."
Key was on his way to a distance-learning location to sell textbooks when he got a call from Jackie Middleton, CSP, Florence O. Wilson Bookstore, The College of Wooster, Wooster, OH, who was chair of the education committee last year.
"Jackie called and asked, 'Are you driving your car?' and then said, 'Don't wreck because you've won the Aspen Award,'" Key recalled.
Key said joining the three previous winners, especially Terry Murphy, CSP, manager, Holyoke Community College Bookstore, Holyoke, MA, is an honor.
"Terry was one of my facilitators when I was going through the NACS Summer Institute," Key said. "He was one of my heroes."
Key has been very active in NACS, including time spent as a member of the NACS Board of Trustees, serving on educational and small stores committees and as faculty for numerous industry institutes and seminars. He also has been active as a board member of the College Stores Association of North Carolina, including time as the group's president.
"I think it is important to give back," Key said. "Awards have little to do with it. It's the giving back of what you have been given. That's just the way I've approached my volunteer work. Getting the award is like icing on the cake, but it's the making of the cake that counts."
This lifetime contribution award is named for the aspen tree, a unique member of the North American wilderness. Aspen forests are many up-growths of a single root system. They are rarely destroyed by wildfire and are actually invigorated by disruption. They provide filtered shade under which other plants can thrive, a place where wildlife can retreat, and add striking beauty to their surroundings in all seasons.
For being recognized as the Aspen Award recipient, Key will have a personalized brick laid in his honor in the "Building for Education" section of the Capital Campaign area at NACS headquarters in Oberlin, OH. He will also receive a memento of the award to display in his home or office.
