Foundataion Fundraising Programs Gain Momentum

In 2007, the NACS Foundation celebrated a milestone—25 years of service to the college store industry—with a mini capital campaign. Launching with a goal of $300,000, the Foundation for the Future campaign finished with an impressive total of $507,296, 169% over goal!

The 25th Anniversary Campaign chair, then Foundation President Robert McCampbell, CSP, Bay Tree Bookstore, University of California, Santa Cruz, said a lot of hard work from many different people made the NACS Foundation's 25th Anniversary a monumental success.

"We set a goal of $300,000 and we ended up with over a half million," McCampbell said. "We were very pleased with what we were able to do for the 25th Anniversary."

The reason for the success, McCampbell said, had a lot to do with the timing of the fundraising. "It was a celebratory event. People tend to recognize something that has been around that long and has done that much for the industry deserves recognition," he said.

Corporate donations were $400,500, personal donations $48,335, state and regional donations $37,750, bookstore donations $4,750, anniversary raffle $9,815, and College Kids special event proceeds $5,486.

As the NACS Foundation continues to increase benefits to further advance the industry through research, educational programming and professional development grants, the Foundation will launch its first Annual Fund this fall with a modest goal of $10,000, focusing on small individual gifts of $25 and up.

The goal is two-fold: to raise monies that will create more opportunities for learning and growth that otherwise might not exist, and heighten awareness about Foundation programs and grants available to our industry members. The Annual Fund Committee is chaired by George Masforroll, Broward Community College Bookstore; Bob McCampbell CSP, co-chair, Bay Tree Bookstore, University of California, Santa Cruz; Tom Bauer CCR, College of San Mateo Bookstore; Beth Christian CCR, University Store, Bloomsburg University; Peg Falgien CCR, University Bookstore, University of Wyoming (retired); Lisa Gray, CCR, Salisbury University Bookstore; Mark Palmore, Foundation president,Connect2One; Lissa Riley CCR, The River Shop, Indian River Community College; Sue Slater CCR, Bearkat Books, Sam Houston State University; and Paul Whitener, Campus One Sportswear.

"When the Foundation closed the books on its 25th Anniversary celebration on April 1, we reflected upon the reasons why the Foundation was created and all of the good it has done serving the College Store Industry—almost $2 million dollars has been used toward funding educational programs and projects, key industry research and professional development grants," said George Masforroll, Annual Fund chair. "However, the economy and our industry are rapidly changing with new technologies, retail sales, and the ever-changing world of course materials, etc. How can the Foundation help our members embrace these changes? I believe that the NACS Foundation Annual Fund is a way for all NACS members to make an individual gift to support various programs the Foundation offers in support of the College Store Industry—scholarships, educational sessions, online courses, and industry specific research."

Support from individuals will allow the Foundation to advance its mission and broaden its reach in the College Store Industry.

"As store budgets decrease and cannot cover the full cost of professional development, education programs or research, Annual Fund dollars are there to create opportunities for learning and growth that otherwise might not exist, " said DeAnn Hazey, executive director of the Foundation. "Participation in the Annual Fund is important because it indicates the depth and breadth of confidence in the College Store Industry by those closest to it. Like each piece in a mosaic, every donor and every gift is vital to maintaining the ongoing strength of our industry.

"We hope to heighten the awareness of our rank and file members about the opportunities that the Foundation can provide them, their colleagues and the College Store Industry. Your participation in the Annual Fund will help to maximize its value to you, and to other NACS members," said Masforroll.
